Laura Turner – The Turning Point
Fitness was not the starting point, but it quickly became the turning point.
Meet Laura Turner. A group exercise instructor, college student, SYFA affiliate and recording artist who has spent almost two decades building a life powered by movement, music and self-belief.
Laura’s journey started at 17, at a point where she felt lost and low in confidence. Discovering Les Mills BODYCOMBAT changed everything. She certified as an instructor in 2006 and has been teaching ever since, while also building a music career under the name Laura T. Her original songs have been played on BBC Introducing, Fresh on the Net and Under the Radar, and she has supported artists like Peter Andre, Blue, Five, A1 and 911 at festivals.
Laura’s story shows how focus can elevate every part of your life. Here's how she balances work, teaching, study, rehearsals and creative projects, and how SYFA Shift supports her on the days when she needs clarity and consistency most.
1. Let’s start with you. What got you into what you do?
As a teenager I was overweight and depressed. At 17 I spent my summer baking and then eating everything I made in front of the Friends TV show.
My mother worked in a gym and was able to gift me her free membership. I had a gym induction and was not overjoyed. It was boring.
Then I tried a Les Mills BODYCOMBAT class and the rest is history. I certified as a group exercise instructor in 2006 and still teach classes today.
2. What are you aiming for over the next 12 months?
I consider myself to be quite ambitious so I am aiming to get more into running, especially in the morning. I love that feeling of having had a great run and then getting things done.
I also plan to release at least six songs next year. Yes, I make music too!
3. What gets in the way?
I am very busy at the moment working in a part time retail job, teaching 7 to 8 classes a week, attending college and singing at weekends solo and in a band.
Housework and general life admin gets in the way, but someone has got to do it!
4. And how do you deal with it?
I plan my week in my diary, a paper diary. Yes, I am old school but it is just the way that works best for me.
I plan out the week and what needs doing on what day. Usually this is successful but some things keep getting pushed depending on my energy levels.
Working out or going for a quick run usually helps me get going. On days where I work super early or have a lot on, SYFA Shift helps.
5. How did you first discover SYFA?
I discovered SYFA at an event I was presenting at - Les Mills Live London. I was there as part of the dance team and SYFA had a stand in the communal area doing tasters.
6. Which SYFA product do you reach for most and why?
I currently have Shift sodas. The flavours are great, I think Citrus Cola is my favourite, and I like that it is not just a regular energy drink.
7. What has changed since you started using SYFA?
Overall I feel more focused and definitely less brain fog - it keeps me focused on what is important.
8. Why did you want to become a SYFA affiliate?
I wanted to become a SYFA affiliate because I know that so many people rely on caffeine and energy drinks on a daily basis. Our working lives seem to be getting more demanding and any great product that can help in a good way needs to be shouted about.
I think we can get hooked on things that are not necessarily good for us and there is so much out there. SYFA is the best. Better absorption of the good stuff, better ingredients, and it is a brand that is made not far from me [in Suffolk], so I consider it local.
9. What does a good day look like for you?
A great workout early in the morning, a productive morning working through my to do list, a music rehearsal or studio session, then home in the evening.
10. Tell us something surprising about you.
I am a solo artist and write my own music! I released my first single in 2022 and have many more songs in the pipeline. My artist name is Laura T. My songs have been picked up by BBC introducing as well as Fresh on the Net, Under the Radar (which champions female independent artists) and Radio West Norfolk. I have also been involved with songs featured with Marie Curie's fundraising campaigns for two years running. I actually have supported people at festivals such as Peter Andre, Five, A1, Blue and 911 - some of my boy band idols from back in the day!
Keeping Your Edge
Laura’s pace is relentless. Coaching, college, live shows and a rising music career all demand the same thing: focus that lasts. SYFA helps her stay clear and steady when her calendar is full and lets her shift between roles without losing momentum.
Her story shows that discipline is not dramatic. It is early mornings, structured plans and habits that keep you moving forward. Once you build that foundation, everything else gets lighter.
