Jules Richards – Finding Focus After the Fall

When a snowboarding accident in 2002 left Jules with fractured vertebrae and a long recovery ahead, it would’ve been easy to slow down. Instead, he did the opposite. What started as rehabilitation turned into a complete lifestyle shift - one built around movement, discipline, and progress.

By 2007, just six months after spinal surgery, Jules crossed the finish line of the London Marathon. That moment sparked a new challenge: triathlon. Today, he balances teaching, training, and family life with the same determination that got him back on his feet in the first place.

We sat down with Jules to talk about consistency, motivation, and how SYFA supports the focus it takes to perform at your best - in sport, work, and life.

What got you into what you do?

“I got into exercise originally in 2002 after a snowboarding accident left me with one fractured and two compressed vertebrae requiring surgery to fit a spinal brace. In 2006 I had the brace removed after it snapped in a surfing incident. I completed the 2007 London Marathon six months after the spinal surgery and, with my newfound fitness, decided to give triathlon a go.”

What are you aiming for over the next 12 months?

“On the international stage, I’m hoping to qualify for the European middle-distance triathlon championships and the T100 world championships.
Locally, I’ve got the South West adult series to focus on, along with longer races like the Kernowman and The ROC Wales – and maybe even the national middle distance too.”

What gets in the way?

“Time and consistency are my biggest enemies. Consistency is key to success in triathlon, and it’s something I’ll be prioritising this season.”

And how do you deal with it?

“Getting focused and being goal-orientated helps. Since using SYFA products I’m less likely to procrastinate and more likely to get everything I need in a day done. That means I can train effectively while staying on top of work and family commitments.”

How did you first discover SYFA?

“A friend of mine introduced me to SYFA a while ago. As soon as I tried Shift for the first time, I was converted.”

Which SYFA product do you reach for most – and why?

“I use Shift Shots and Shift Soda. I take them early morning to get focused and get the best out of my training. I find I can push harder in demanding sessions, and it also improves my endurance.”

What’s changed since you started using SYFA?

“Since starting to use SYFA I’ve definitely found my focus, drive, and productivity have increased. I find it helps me get into a flow state much more easily.”

Why did you want to become a SYFA affiliate?

“I love working with companies whose products I believe in, helping them reach more people and make a positive change.”

What does a good day look like for you?

“Up at 6am with a shot of Shift - obviously. Off to the gym and then into work for 8am. I like to get a training session in at lunch, either a swim or a run.
I’m a teacher at an independent school and I’m lucky that every Wednesday and Saturday I get to ride with the triathlon squad - a couple of hours on the bike followed by some quality family time.”

Tell us something surprising about you.

“I was the eye of Big Brother in 2006!”

Jules’ story is a reminder that progress isn’t about perfection - it’s about persistence. Every small effort adds up when you stay consistent, stay curious, and stay switched on.

At SYFA, that’s exactly what we build for - clean focus, clear drive, and the kind of energy that works with you, not against you.
